DATA AND PLACE OF BIRTH:

April 15, 1960, Syzran’, Kuibyshev (Samara) Region, RSFSR (Russia).
Farther: Boris Grigorievich Kornienko, 1928-1965, a military pilot, was killed in the aircraft accident.
Mother: Faina Mikhailovna Kornienko, born in 1931, a pensioner.

EDUCATION:

In 1987 he graduated from the evening department of Moscow Aviation Institute after S. Ordzhonikidze and got qualification as a mechanical engineer.

HONORS AND AWARDS:

Hero of the Russian Federation, Pilot-Cosmonaut of the Russian Federation. Decorated with Gold Star Medal of Hero of the Russian Federation, Badge of Honor For Services to the Town of Syzran’, Samara Area.

HOBBY:

Running, swimming, winter swimming, athleticism. In August 2007 Mikhail Kornienko made an ascent of the Kilimanjaro crest.

Married. Wife: Irina Anatolievna Kornienko (Savostina), born in 1958, a physician.

WORK EXPERIENCE:

From 1978 to 1980 he passed the basic military service in the air-transported troops of the Soviet Army.

In 1980-1986 he worked as a policeman.

In 1981-1987 he studied at the evening department of Moscow Aviation Institute.

In 1986-1991 he was an engineer of General Machine-Building Design Bureau (GMBDB) in Moscow.

From October 1991 to December 1992 he was the OOO Transvostok Technical and Production Department Director.

From January 1993 to April 1995 he was the LLC ESTE General Director.

From April 1995 to April 1998 he was the 2-nd category engineer of RSC Energia.

He worked in the department of the cosmonaut training for extravehicular activity.

On February 24, 1998 he was selected as a candidate for cosmonauts by decision of the State Interdepartmental Qualification Committee and on March 23, 1998 by Order of the RSA General Director and Order of the RSC Energia President of April 10, 1998 he was appointed as a candidate for test cosmonauts of the RSC Energia cosmonaut corps.

In 1998-1999 he passed a course of general space training and on December 1, 1999 he became qualified as a test cosmonaut by decision of the Interdepartmental Qualification Committee.

From August 2001 to February 2003 he passed training under a program for the ISS flight engineer and the Soyuz TMA TSC commander of the ISS-8 backup crew for launch by the Shuttle Orbiter.

From March 2003 to August 2005 he passed training within the cosmonaut group under the ISS program.

From September 2005 to January 2006 he passed training in the International group for flights onboard the ISS.

Since February 2006 he has been passing training within the ISS-15 backup crew as the ISS and the Soyuz TMA TSC flight engineer.

In July 2008 there appeared some reports that he was assigned to the main crew of Expedition 23 to the ISS (ISS-23). On September 23 this assignment was confirmed in the ISS flight plan released by the Roscosmos press office.

On November 2008 his assignment was officially confirmed by NASA (press release No.8-306) when the crews of ISS-20 – ISS-26 were announced.

On March 11 – 12, 2010 at the Cosmonaut Training Center he together with Aleksandr Skvortsov and NASA astronaut Tracy Caldwell Dyson passed preflight examinations with an excellent mark.

On April 1, 2010 by the Interdepartmental Commission Mikhail Kornienko was approved as a flight engineer of the Soyuz TMA-18 vehicle and the ISS-23/24 prime crews.

He performed his first space flight from April 2 to September 25, 2010 under the program for the ISS-23/24 prime crews as the ISS, Soyuz TMA-18 MTV flight engineer.

In flight he performed one extravehicular activity of the duration of 6 hr 43 min.

The mission duration was 176 days 1 hr 19 min.

At the meeting of the Interdepartmental Commission for selection of cosmonauts and their assignment to the crews of manned spacecraft and stations on April 26, 2010 Mikhail Kornienko was certified as the RSC Energia detachment cosmonaut.

To execute the Roscosmos Order about establishment of the single cosmonaut detachment Kornienko quitted RSC Energia. On January 22, 2011 by Order of CTC Head he was enlisted in CTC NII detachment as a test cosmonaut.

On November 26, 2012 he was approved as a member of the prime crew of the Soyuz TMA-16M vehicle under the program for an annual flight (ISS-43/44 Expedition) together with Scott Kelly.

On January 31, 2014 Kornienko within the crew of ISS-43/44 together with Gennadiy Padalka and Scott Kelly took part in trainings to take measures in case of the emergency landing in the forest and marshy area in winter.

On September 3, 2014 he began to pass comprehensive training as a flight engineer of the ISS-41/42 backup crew together with commander Gennady Padalka and flight engineer Scott Kelly. This day the examination training on MTV Soyuz TMA occurred, for which the crew received an excellent mark. On September 4 the crew passed the test training on the ISS Russian Segment.

On September 24, 2014 at Baikonur at a meeting of the State Commission for conducting flight tests of manned space complexes Mikhail Kornienko was approved as flight engineer-1 of MTV Soyuz TMA-14M backup crew. During the launch of MTV Soyuz TMA-14M on September 26, 2014 he was flight engineer-1 backup of the vehicle crew.
